So you’re in med school. You’ve earned it; bragging rights et al. Certain people may even start coming to you for medical advice, forgetting that an admission letter isn’t equal to a medical degree. Don’t get pissed; embrace the hype!
But before you get carried away realise that you’ve won a battle not the war. So lace up those boots, fasten your seat belts and get ready because ‘air-insane’ is about to land.
Now picture this; you, 6 years from now. Where would you be? Let’s be abnormal and try to answer this question with questions.
1. WHAT NEXT AFTER MED SCHOOL?
Your dream may probably be to get a PhD, open a hospital, become a consultant, lecture, further your education or even dump medicine for music. Whichever the case, the choice is yours but you must know that you’ll live with whatever you decide for the rest of your life.
2. WHO IS IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE?
Several forces influence the study of medicine. From making money to certificate hungry parents. All these reasons however can’t help you when you hit rock bottom; get burned out, frustrated, or worse. Only genuine interest can thrive under such circumstances. Do you love medicine for its own sake? Would you still love it if the money and hype are gone? If your answer is yes. Then take charge! Improve yourself daily, never stop learning, filter information given to you for your benefit, realise who matters, what matters, and do away with the rest.
3. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ACHIEVE ALL THESE?
That’s left for you to decide. Drop the “I can’t kill myself” attitude. Put in your very best.
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. Mediocrity is for cowards. According to the movie LONE SURVIVOR, “There’s no mountain too high, no water too deep, no task too difficult”
All the best!
