FIRST YEAR COURSES

Year 1 Courses, Their Units, Lecturers, And How to pass them.

The first semester year one courses for students in College of medicine /Sciences, and a Few Engineering, Environmental Science and Education students are
Fsc101, FSC102, FSC103, FSC104
, FSC105, ZLY101, GST102, GST105.

Now these are just meaningless codes to you, but as you read on, one of the very best students among your predecessors, Oyeleye Oluwagbemiga, would be demystifying these courses and sharing tips that can make you excel, as he did.

Below are the year one courses, their full names, their units, possible lecturers, helpful texts and advice on how to pass them.

FSC101: Introductory Biology, 3 units, lecturers are Dr.kahlid and Dr.Kelechi. Most important parts are cell, genetics, ecology and evolution. Students should strive to attend lectures, copy notes and perform well in labs.

FSC102: Introductory chemistry, 3 units, lecturers are Mrs Oyeniola and co. Much more of calculations, students should ensure they understand Rates of reaction very well and have a sound knowledge in stoichochemistry. Tackle this part and you’ll have an A.

FSC103: Introductory computer, 3 units, Get the textbook at the bookshop, study it over and over again. As well as the 400 questions included, though don’t depend totally on it. The department may set brand new questions. Your knowledge of programming is crucial, especially Visual Basics.

FSC104: Introductory Mathematics, 3 units. Dr.Osilagun, Dr.Gbademu. This course is a tough nut to crack. You must understand mathematics as a discipline. Don’t depend totally on whatever textbook they tell you to buy or past questions. Learn Co-ordinate geometry like the palm of your fingers.Study AP and GP too. Understand the concept of binomial theorem.

FSC105: Introductory physics 3 units, Mr Adewale, Dr Adeloye (a.k.a Grandpa). Get Mr.Adewale’s textbook, Thermal Physics. Solve the entire questions in the book.Never miss his tests, pay attention to every detail. By now you’d have got Grandpa’s material.

ZLY101: Introductory zoology 2 units. Dr. Idowu, Dr. Akeredolu. Scribble down whatever you can, endeavour to sit at the front. Try not to go much beyond your lecture note. A useful zoology textbook would be Animal Diversity. Do not skip class too, Labs are very imortant.

GST102 and GST105: You can skip class if you want, but make sure you are well informed because they conduct tests. They are very easy, either you pass or fail them, no units. Don’t let the course tamper with your beliefs, I mean Philosophy.

The above tips are for first year medical students of the University of Lagos, follow them effectively, then the sky is your starting point. Yeah, you heard right, and from a achieved scholar who is a testimony to success.

    1. @harreeate, tutorials depend on the student, if it works for you and not too stressful, fine. There’re a few good ones around, they’ll come to you, ask them a lot of questions before deciding on one, especially the timing, because you need time for yourself too.

Your question on GST would be answered very soon by one of your predecessors.

    1. Thank you @Dohwodese
It’s diploma students who have MCQs only. For UME, it’s both MCQ and theory.

Please does anyone know the requirements for passing year 1 and gaining admission to Idi-Araba. I don’t really understand what the prospectus was saying.

    1. Dohwodese, there’s a way they group the courses into Physical, Chemical and biological and take your average. Your averages must be more than 50% to cross. For we diploma, we just had to pass a cut off. A former year one student will elaborate further for you.

Happy Matriculation, how are you enjoying Unilag?
