Avoiding Brain Damage

The brain is the center of thought, action and coordination in the human body. As a medical student or practitioner, or in any profession for that matter, you need your brain’s physiology to be at its optimal best. Some lifestyles are harmful to the brain and could hinder its ability to function. Here we list and elaborate on some of them.

1. No Breakfast
You can imagine how many of us skip breakfast on a regular basis. The breakfast being the most important meal of the day is a common axiom that’s already becoming cliched. There are many benefits accrued from having a healthy breakfast regularly. Added to that infinite list is the benefits to the brain. People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level.
This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration. You can imagine how many of us skip breakfast on a regular basis. The breakfast being the most important meal of the day is a common axiom that’s already becoming cliched.

2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power. As much as it is important to eat, it is also important to watch what and how much we eat. The quality and more importantly when it comes to the brain, the quality of what we eat matters much.

3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease. This is common knowledge I guess. Asides the pulmonary repercussions of taking a drag or two now and then,  massive cranial deterioration is another risk.

4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. Many of today’s youth hardly sleep e.g. Me and my many friends in medigist group and other social networks. We’re always up (especially Ksee the vigilante) at ungodly hours tweeting, chatting, blogging (in my case), watching movies, and when school is in session, studying our heads off. Some of us hardly sleep (I’ve never heard of or seen The Vigilante sleep). As medical students, it’s unusual to have a good night rest. What with in courses and professionals looming around the corner. My advice to us; please sleep, it’s very important. Your sanity matters more than your grades (Victor would argue this).

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulating thoughts may cause brain shrinkage. Yeah, just as iron rust from disuse, so does the brain. Use your head!

10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain. So don’t be shy, open your mouth and talk, reach out, communicate, love, laugh, express yourself. It’ll boost your social health and your mental health too. They’ll call you lousy and loquacious, like me, but who cares, so long your brain is healthy. Note please: talk doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch what you say.
